Salford has a long and proud history receiving its charter before our more famous close neighbour, Manchester. The world famous Manchester Docks were within the boundaries of the City of Salford and were actually called Salford Docks. This area has been at the centre of a massive regeneration programme and is now known as The Salford Quays, the Quays houses the multi million pound Lowry Centre, home to the largest collection of LS Lowry paintings. The lowry also has two theatres with touring companies from all over the world, ballet, drama, concerts and opera.

Opposite The Lowry, via the new bridge, the Imperial War Museum North is under construction and will be open early 2002, this, along with an outlet village next door to The Lowry, completes the total re-landscaping of the old docks skyline. Old warehouses and cranes have been replaced by modern glass offices and the old railway lines by the ultra modern Metrolink tram system.
